Back to School!

It's that time of year, friends - back to school! For some families, it's all smiles and celebrating, and for others, it's a scary transition! And that's all normal and okay!

Tips for Back to School Success:

  1. Know how much sleep your child actually needs and plan your schedule accordingly! Preschoolers (ages 3-5) require 10-13 hours of sleep, school-age children (ages 6-12) require 9-12 hours of sleep, and teenagers (ages 13-18) require 8-10 hours of sleep per day. This total includes day AND night sleep!

  2. Button up your bedtime routine! This means getting screens off an hour before bedtime and adding calming activities like a warm bath or shower, reading or journaling, and connection time with a parent or caregiver.

  3. Optimize the sleep environment. Keep the room as dark as tolerated, cool, and free of too many distractions.

  4. Other helpful tips - exercise early in the day if possible, resist the temptation to overly schedule your child with too many extracurricular activities, and limit daytime napping for kids 5+!
